The story follows one woman’s family across generations, showing how marriage, motherhood, and the idea of what a woman’s life should look like can shift over time. I was drawn to the different ways these women have lived their lives, and to the layers of old expectations and desires they carry with them. I wanted to capture the tension between those inherited ideas and the quiet moment when a woman begins to move beyond them and reveal a life of her own. Fires Left Behind? I created a series of illustrations for Dana Goodyear’s article, “Can Wildflowers Heal the Toxic Mess the L.A. Fires Left Behind?” in National Geographic’s September 2026 issue. The article explores how native wildflowers can help restore toxic soil left behind by the January 2025 Los Angeles wildfires, and how the process of regrowth can bring a sense of hope and renewal to affected communities. For the illustrations, I wanted to visualize that gradual movement from loss toward recovery. I was especially drawn to the story’s atmosphere of desire, obsession, and tension. While reading the novel, I wanted to capture the strange mix of beauty and destructiveness in desire, and the feeling of an obsession that slowly deepens and takes over. It was a fascinating story to work with, and I really enjoyed exploring that raw and unsettling atmosphere through the images. I created a series of three illustrations for the story, designed to unfold across multiple spreads. The opening image shows the balloons floating quietly past Seoul’s Namsan Tower and heading toward the North. I liked the contrast between this familiar Seoul landscape and the destination just beyond it — a place that feels so close, yet remains almost impossible to see. The balloons themselves became an important part of the visual language of the story. They are light, delicate, and almost beautiful as they drift through the night, yet they carry stories of separation, longing, exhaustion, and hope. I wanted the three images to move between these different feelings, capturing something of the quiet courage of the people behind the balloons and the bittersweet complexity of lives shaped by division and exile. I wanted to capture Europe at a pivotal moment, navigating profound uncertainty and change while searching for a new direction. The stormy sea and muted atmosphere reflect the weight and turbulence of the moment, while the movement of the carrier and drones suggests a sense of urgency and forward momentum. Through this image, I explored the idea of Europe being tested as it moves through a period of disruption and considers what might lie beyond it.
